Lotus Eyes, Rain-Cloud Dark

Krishnashtakam 5

Meaning · English

Eyes like the petals of a lotus in full bloom, dark as a blue-black rain cloud, the crown jewel of the Yadavas: I bow to Krishna, teacher of the world.

His eyes are compared to the petals of a lotus that has fully opened: long, wide, and soft at the edges. His skin is the color of a heavy rain cloud, deep blue-black, the cloud that brings water rather than gloom. He is the crest jewel of the Yadavas, the most precious one of the clan he belongs to. The line closes the way every verse does: I bow to Krishna, the teacher of the whole world.

Think of a ring with a single stone raised above the band. The gold circle holds it up and keeps it steady, but the stone is what catches the light and what people notice first. The Yadava clan is the band, a whole line of kings and kin, and Krishna is the stone they carry at the top.
