With Rukmini, in Yellow Silk
Krishnashtakam 6
Meaning · English
At play in Rukmini's company, made beautiful by his yellow silk, carrying the scent of holy basil: Krishna, teacher of the world, I bow to him.
Three things are named, all close and domestic. Krishna is with Rukmini, his queen, joined with her in play. The word is for light, affectionate games, not a contest. He is set off by yellow silk, the cloth that makes him look his finest. And the scent of holy basil has settled on him and goes where he goes. The line then closes as every line of the hymn does: I bow to Krishna, teacher of the world.
A headmaster the whole town knows from the assembly stage, seen one Sunday at his own gate: laughing with his wife over some small game, in his best bright shirt, garden soil still on his hands. The hymn does the same thing. It calls Krishna teacher of the world while showing him at home, at ease, close enough to smell.
