Red-Marked Chest, Great Archer

Krishnashtakam 7

Meaning · English

I bow to Krishna, teacher of the world: his chest marked with red powder from the cowherd women's bosoms, home of the goddess of fortune, the mighty archer.

The cowherd women wore red powder on their bosoms. When they held Krishna close, it rubbed off onto him, and his chest still carries that red mark. The same chest is called the home of the goddess of fortune, the place she chooses to live. Then he is named a great archer, someone with a strong bow and a sure hand. Tenderness, fortune and strength all belong to one person. The line closes the way every line does: I bow to Krishna, teacher of the world.

A child runs in from painting and hugs her father, leaving a red handprint on his white shirt. He wears it for the rest of the day and never changes. Anyone who sees the stain knows someone small held on to him. The red on Krishna's chest works the same way: it shows who has been close.
