Conch, Discus, Forest Garland

Krishnashtakam 8

Meaning · English

Bearing the curled mark on his breast, broad-chested, bright with a garland of forest flowers, holding conch and discus: Krishna, the god, teacher of the world, I bow to him.

The eye rests on his chest. A small curl-shaped mark sits there, the sign by which Vishnu is known. The chest itself is broad. Across it hangs a garland of wildflowers and leaves gathered in the woods, the kind a cowherd would wear, and it makes him shine. In his hands are the conch and the discus, Vishnu's own emblems. Then comes the line the singer has returned to all along: this is Krishna, the god, the world's teacher, and I bow to him.

Picture a village doctor walking through the market. A stethoscope hangs round his neck, and a marigold from a neighbour's garden is tucked in his shirt pocket. The stethoscope tells you what he is. The flower tells you he belongs to these streets. The mark, conch and discus name him as Vishnu. The woodland garland keeps him the boy from the pastures.
