Krishnashtakam 9
Meaning · English
Whoever rises at dawn and recites this sacred Krishnashtakam, by that remembrance the wrongs done across ten million births are destroyed.
After eight verses describing Krishna, the hymn turns to the person singing it. It calls itself meritorious, something that does good to whoever takes it up. The setting is plain: getting up at dawn and reading it. The claim is large. Wrongs piled up over ten million lifetimes, more than anyone could count, are destroyed. The means is small: remembering. Reading the eight verses is a way of calling Krishna to mind, and the hymn says that remembering is what does the destroying.
A room shut up for years is dark. Flip the switch and the dark does not drain away over hours. It is gone the instant the bulb comes on, however long it sat there. The hymn speaks of old wrongs the same way: the ages they took to gather do not slow their going once Krishna is remembered.
