Uddhava says: Krishna, those who speak of Brahman name many ways to the highest good. Among them, is the variety itself what matters, or is one of them chief? You, master, have described the yoga of devotion as looking to nothing else. By it a person drops attachment to everything and the mind enters into you.

Uddhava has heard Krishna teach for some time. Now he asks the question a careful listener would ask: which way is really the highest? Three words carry it. Shreyas means the highest good, what is finally best for a person, as against what is merely pleasant. Brahmavadin means one who speaks of Brahman, so the teachers and knowers who each recommend their own path. Bhakti comes from bhaj, to share in, to take part. It is loving devotion, a sharing of oneself with the beloved. Sanga means clinging, attachment. In the first verse Uddhava says that knowers of Brahman name many routes to the highest good. He asks whether their variety is the point, with each route as good as another, or whether one is meant to be chief. In the second he reminds Krishna of something Krishna himself has said: devotion needs no other support, and through it a person lets go of attachment to everything and the mind enters Krishna. The question is a real one. Uddhava has been told of several paths and wants the teacher to settle it, so he can walk one road with a whole heart. The commentators read the question as an honest request for Krishna's own ranking. It asks nothing of the listener yet, except to listen to the answer.

A hill village has several footpaths up to the spring. The walkers argue over which is best, and each path has its champions. An old woman asks only which one she can climb every day with a full pot. The paths are the many teachings, and the pot is the one thing that must actually reach the top.

1. Tonight, write down every practice or piece of advice about the spiritual life that has been pressed on you. Keep it to one page. 2. Beside each, note whether it draws you or only impresses you. 3. Circle the one your heart keeps going back to. 4. For five minutes tomorrow morning, give that one your full attention, and leave the rest on the page.

A retired teacher sits at her kitchen table a few months after her husband's death. Her neighbours have each brought a remedy: one says chant, one says join the yoga class, one says fast on Mondays, one says give to charity. All of it is kindly meant, and she ends the evening doing none of it, more tired than before. Krishna's answer, as Uddhava prepares to hear it, begins with her very question: of all these, which is chief? The verse would change that evening in small steps. She would stop treating the list as a debt owed to everyone. She would ask which one her own heart turns toward when the house is quiet. She would give that one a fixed small place in the day and let the others be good things done by other people. Ordinary experience agrees that a crowd of options leaves a tired person stalled, and a single steady practice is easier to keep. The verse does not promise that this ends her grief, and it does not replace a doctor if sleep or appetite fail for weeks.
