Meaning · English

In time, at the great dissolution, this speech called the Veda was lost. At the beginning I spoke it to Brahma, and the dharma within it has me as its very self. Brahma gave it to his own son, Manu, the eldest. From Manu, Bhrigu and the other great sages, seven in all, received it.

Krishna is explaining where the Veda came from, and he starts with a loss. Pralaya is the dissolution at the end of a world-age, when everything folds back. Krishna says the Veda, which he calls speech (vani), was lost in that time. It was not kept in any book. Then he says he spoke it again at the start of the next age, to Brahma. He adds one thing about its content: the dharma in it is madatmaka, which means it has Krishna as its self. Dharma comes from dhri, to hold up. So what holds the world up is not a set of rules standing apart from him. It is him. The rest is a line of handing down. Brahma teaches his son Manu. Manu is called the eldest, the first in the line. From Manu, Bhrigu and the other great sages receive it, seven in all. The reason for telling this to Uddhava is that he has asked which of the many teachings to follow. Krishna starts by showing that the Veda's word has one source and a traceable chain. The varied opinions come later. The verse asks Uddhava to see where the teaching rests: on Krishna, who is the self of the dharma it teaches.

A farmer saves a sack of seed grain through a flood that wipes out every field. When the water drops, he sows it, and neighbours take handfuls to sow their own. The harvests are many, yet all of them trace to one sack. The Veda lost at dissolution and spoken again by Krishna is that sack.

1. Choose one verse, song or recipe an older person in your family knows by heart. 2. This week, ask them to say it or show it, and write it down as they do. 3. Note who taught it to them. 4. Teach it aloud to someone younger, or to a friend, within a few days. Notice how much you forgot between writing it down and saying it.

A schoolteacher sits by his mother's bed. She is old and tired, and she is humming a harvest song nobody else in the family knows. He realises that when she goes, the song goes too. He switches on his phone and asks her to sing it again, slowly, and tells her who taught her. That small act holds what the verse describes, step by step. First comes the plain fact that a teaching can be lost, because it lives in one person's memory. Then comes a speaker who gives it again, which here is the mother singing. Then it goes into the next pair of ears, and from those to others. Krishna's account says the Veda was lost and given again in just this way, from teacher to student, with names attached. Ordinary experience confirms that anything unrepeated fades, and that a name attached to a teaching helps it last. The verse does not promise that the song will be kept whole, or that the one who learns it will understand it as fully as the one who gave it. It also does not ease the sorrow of the bedside.
