Meaning · English
From those forefathers came their sons: gods and demons, guhyakas, human beings, siddhas and gandharvas, vidyadharas and charanas, kindevas, kinnaras, nagas, rakshasas, kimpurushas and the rest. Many are their natures, born of rajas, sattva and tamas. By these natures living beings are divided, and so are their ways of thinking. According to each one's own nature, the words of all of them flow out in many colours.
Three words carry this teaching. Prakriti means nature, the settled make-up a being is born with; the root sense is what is put forth first. Guna means a strand or quality. Sattva is clarity and calm, rajas is restless drive, and tamas is dullness and heaviness. Krishna says every prakriti is a mixture of these three, in different proportions. The clauses go in order. The sages' sons spread into gods, demons, humans and many other kinds of beings. Their natures are many because the three strands combine in many ways. Those natures divide beings from one another, and they also divide minds. Then comes the last clause: each person's speech follows their own nature, so what people say about the highest good comes out varied. Why teach this here? Uddhava has asked why the knowers of Brahman name so many different goods, and whether they all matter equally or one stands first. Krishna's first answer is not a ranking. It is an account of where disagreement comes from. Teachers differ because the speakers differ, not because the truth has split. The commentators read the sentence as preparing the ground for the next verses, where Krishna names the cause of the confusion. What it asks of the listener is to hear a claim together with the nature it comes from, and to be slow to take any single loud voice as the whole answer.
A room with windows of red, green and blue glass. The same daylight falls on the floor, yet each pane throws its own colour, and a visitor who has seen only one window would swear the light is red. The light stands for what is true. The panes stand for natures, which tint what each person says about it.
1. Today, when someone gives you advice or an opinion, pause for one breath before answering. 2. Ask yourself quietly: what sort of temperament is speaking, restless, calm or weary? 3. Listen to the rest of what they say with that in mind, and notice whether it changes how you take it. 4. Do the same once with your own words this evening: was it a rushed, a clear, or a heavy sentence?
A man sits beside his father's hospital bed while relatives phone in. One uncle says operate at once. An aunt says try herbs first. A cousin says it is all fate. By evening he is more tired from the advice than from the vigil. Krishna's teaching changes the moment in steps. First, he notices that each voice carries its speaker's temperament: the hurried one, the cautious one, the fatalistic one. Next, he stops taking the loudest sentence as the whole truth, and he stops being angry at the speakers. Then he sorts what was said from the manner of saying it, and brings the medical questions to the doctor. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: a worried person sounds different from a rested one, and the same person gives different advice on different days. The teaching does not settle which relative is right, and it does not ease the fear in that room. It is no substitute for the doctor's judgment about the father's care.
