So, through the variety of their natures, people's views divide. Some hold their view through a line of teachers passed along; others hold views set against the Veda. Their minds bewildered by my maya, O best of men, people name the highest good in many ways, each according to his deeds and his taste.
Three words carry the verse. Prakriti is a person's make-up, the temperament they were born with and have built up. Maya is Krishna's own power, the one that clouds the mind so that it mistakes the part for the whole. Shreyas is the highest good, what is finally best for a person. The verse ends on two small phrases: yatha-karma, according to one's past deeds, and yatha-ruci, according to one's taste. Taken clause by clause: because natures differ, views differ. Some views come down through a line of teachers. Others stand against the Veda's way. Krishna says that people whose minds are bewildered by his maya declare the highest good in many ways, and each person's answer follows what he has done and what he likes. The question behind it is Uddhava's: why do sincere people disagree so sharply about what is best? Krishna answers that disagreement does not show the highest good is unknowable. It shows how deeds and taste shape the one who is looking. Sridhara Svami reads the second line as sorting views by their source, whether received from a lineage or invented against it. The verse asks the listener to see that their own sense of what is best is not neutral. It has been coloured by habit and liking, and it is worth holding with that in mind.
Five people stand at a fruit stall, and each swears by a different fruit as the best. Each is honestly describing what they have always eaten and loved. In the same way, each person's account of the highest good is partly an account of their own past and appetite.
1. Tonight, write down one thing you are sure is best for your life, in a single line. 2. Beside it, write two things you have done or enjoyed for years that may have shaped that certainty. 3. Tomorrow, when someone disagrees with you about what matters, listen to the end before you answer, and notice which of their deeds or tastes could be speaking.
A young woman is home for a cousin's wedding. Over tea, one aunt tells her the best life is marriage and children, another says a steady salary, a third says daily prayer. Each speaks with total confidence, and she leaves feeling pulled three ways. The verse changes the moment in steps. First, it lets her hear each aunt as a person whose certainty grew out of her own deeds and likings, not as a judge delivering a verdict. Second, it lets her turn the same look on herself, and ask what her own pull toward one answer is made of. Third, it leaves the question of what is truly best open for further teaching, which Krishna goes on to give. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: what we have lived through and enjoyed colours what we call good. The verse does not tell her which aunt is right, and it does not settle her decision about her own life.
