Goals That Fade

Meaning · English
Some name dharma as the aim, some fame, some desire, truth, self-mastery or calm. Others say self-interest, lordship, giving up, or enjoyment. Some say sacrifice, austerity, charity, vows, observances and restraints. Every one of these worlds has a beginning and an end. Action builds them. Their fruit is pain, they rest in darkness, their joys are small, and grief is poured into them.
Krishna is listing what people say life is for. The list is long on purpose: duty, reputation, pleasure, honesty, discipline, peace, profit, power, renunciation, enjoyment, rituals, penances, gifts, vows. Most of these are respectable. Krishna does not call them wicked. His point is about where they lead. Three words carry it. Karma is action, from kri, to do. Loka is a world or realm, the place a thing takes you. Duhkha-udarka means 'with pain as the aftermath': udarka is what comes after. Krishna says each goal gives a world made by action, and what action makes has a start and a finish. The worlds also hold only kshudra-ananda, small joy, and the grief that follows it. The commentators read 'resting in darkness' as these worlds being built on ignorance of one's true nature, not on bad conduct. The question behind it is the one Uddhava is carrying: with so many teachers and paths, which one holds? Krishna first shows what a goal won by effort is worth. That clears the ground for what he will name as the one thing that does not run out. He asks Uddhava to look at what each path finally delivers, not at how admirable it sounds.
A child builds a sandcastle above the waterline, careful with every tower and moat. It is real work and it really stands. By evening the sea has taken it. The goals in the list are the castles: made by effort, good while they last, and bound to end.
1. Tonight, take five minutes and write down three things you worked hardest for this year. 2. Beside each, write how long the satisfaction lasted after you got it, in days or hours. 3. Notice which ones left something behind besides a memory of the effort. 4. Say nothing against any of them. Only note what each gave and when it ran out.
A woman finishes her first marathon after a year of early mornings. She cries at the line. By the following Thursday she is sitting on her sofa, oddly flat, scrolling for the next race. Krishna's list would meet her there. He names discipline, vows and effort among the goals, and says each gives a world with an end and a small joy. Step by step, the verse would let her see that the flatness is no failure of her training. The goal was real and the joy was real, and both were bounded. She could enjoy the medal without asking it to carry the whole weight of her peace. She could also notice what she is reaching for by scrolling. Ordinary experience confirms the pattern: a long-wanted thing is often welcomed fully and then fades within days. The verse does not promise that she will stop wanting things, or that the flatness will vanish. If low mood stays for weeks, or sleep and appetite change, that is a matter for a doctor and not for a teaching about goals.
