Meaning · English

For one whose self is given to me, who looks to nothing anywhere for support, there is a happiness that comes through me, the Self. How could people lost in sense objects have it? Good friend, for one who owns nothing, who is restrained, peaceful and even-minded, whose mind is content in me, every direction is full of happiness.

Krishna uses a few plain words, and they carry the verse. Nirapeksha means not looking toward anything for support; apeksha is the glance of expectation we send at people and things, waiting for them to make us well. Akinchana means owning not even a little, a person who holds nothing as a prop. Shanta is the quiet left when the restless pulling stops. Santushta is the mind that is full and asks for no more. Krishna says the first kind of person has given the self to him. Because of that, they need nothing from anywhere, and a happiness arrives through Krishna as the inner Self. Then he asks a question: how could people absorbed in sense objects have this? He means their happiness is borrowed from outside, so it is gone when the object goes. The second half describes the same devotee from another side: owns nothing, restrained, calm, steady in gain and loss, content in Krishna. For such a person, wherever they turn, the world is pleasant. The commentators read these as marks of one devotee, not separate ranks. It is taught here because Krishna has just listed the many goals people chase, and now says where lasting happiness actually sits. It asks the listener to notice where their own contentment is currently being fetched from.

Someone walks home at night carrying a lit lantern. Whichever lane they turn into, there is light on the path. Someone else waits for streetlamps and is lost between them. The lantern is a mind content in Krishna: its light goes along, so every direction is bright.

1. Tonight, name one thing you are waiting on to feel settled: a message, a purchase, someone's approval. 2. Sit for five minutes with it unresolved, and notice where in your body the waiting sits. 3. Then say quietly, in your own words, that the day and the wanting are Krishna's, and put the thing down. 4. Tomorrow, notice once whether you reached for your phone or a snack from habit, and stop for one breath before you do.

A schoolteacher wakes on her first morning of retirement. The bell that ran her days is gone, and the calendar is empty. She notices she is checking her phone for someone to need her, and a low unease sits in her chest. The verse gives her a different question: what has her contentment been leaning on? Step by step, she can see the unease is a lean toward outside things, toward being needed and being busy. She can sit with it a few minutes without feeding it, let the lean ease, and then do the morning's small tasks as offerings to Krishna rather than proofs of her worth. Ordinary experience confirms that wanting something outside to settle us keeps us restless until it arrives, and often after. The verse promises no cure for loneliness, grief or low mood. It does not replace a doctor or a counsellor if the heaviness stays. It also does not say that having a home or family is wrong; it speaks of where the mind rests.
