Wanting Only Him

Meaning · English
The one whose self is placed in me wants nothing apart from me: not the rank of Brahma, not Indra's throne, not rule over the whole earth, not lordship of the lower worlds, not yogic powers, not even freedom from rebirth.
Three words carry the verse. Arpita means placed or offered: the devotee's whole self has been set down in Krishna's hands, like an offering laid on an altar. Siddhi means an accomplishment, here the powers a yogi is said to gain by long practice. Apunarbhava means no more becoming, the end of being born again, which is what liberation is called. Krishna lists what the devoted person does not ask for. He starts at the top: the seat of Brahma the creator, the throne of Indra, king of the gods. Then come rule over the earth and lordship of the underworld realms, then yogic powers, and last liberation itself. The list climbs from the greatest posts in the universe to the highest freedom, and the answer to each is the same. The last words, nothing apart from me, give the reason: whatever he is offered is something other than Krishna. The commentators read the mention of liberation as the surprise, since many traditions treat it as the final goal. Krishna says it is still a thing a devotee does not reach for. The teaching answers a plain question from the verses before it: if worldly aims end in sorrow, what does the devoted heart want instead? It wants him, and no payment for wanting him. The verse asks the listener to look at what lies underneath their own asking.
A child lost in a crowded fair is offered sweets, a balloon, a ride on the carousel. She takes none of it and keeps looking over their shoulders. The offers are the heavenly ranks, powers and even liberation; the face she is searching for is the only thing she wants.
1. Tonight, before sleep, take two minutes and write down what you asked for today, in prayer or in plain wishing. 2. Read the list once. Notice how many items are things, results or relief. 3. Choose one wish and say it aloud, then add: and above all, to stay close to you. 4. Sit quietly for one minute with only that last line. Notice what in you objects, and what rests.
A grandmother reaches the temple door after an hour in the queue. In her head is a list: her grandson's exam, the loan, her knee, a daughter's marriage. She notices she has been rehearsing the list the whole way and has not once thought of the one she came to see. Krishna's teaching, as the text gives it, would change that moment in small steps. She would see the list for what it is, a set of requests to a giver. She would then set it down, not as a rejected thing but as a bundle placed before him, and turn her attention to the one she is facing. In the text's account the devoted desire nothing apart from Krishna, and she would taste a little of that. Ordinary experience agrees that a crowd of wants scatters attention, and that putting them down, even briefly, quiets the mind. The verse does not promise that the loan will vanish, the knee will heal or the exam will go well. Medicine and practical effort still have their place. What it speaks to is only where the heart rests while those things are being dealt with.
