Dearer Than Himself

Bhagavata Purana 11.14.15

Meaning · English

Krishna says to Uddhava: Brahma, born of me, is not so dear to me. Nor is Shankara, nor Sankarshana, nor Shri. Even my own self is not as dear to me as you are.

Krishna names the greatest figures he knows and puts Uddhava ahead of each. Priyatama means the dearest, the most beloved. Atmayoni, the self-born, is a name for Brahma, maker of the world. Shankara is Shiva. Sankarshana is a close divine form of Krishna himself, as the commentators take him. Shri is Lakshmi, his own consort. Last comes atma, the self. Krishna says even his own self is not as dear to him as Uddhava. The line climbs from creator to destroyer to kinsman to beloved, and then past all of them to Krishna's own being. The commentators read the list as measuring the warmth of his love for a devotee, not as ranking the gods against one another. It is taught here because the verses before it describe a devotee who wants nothing from Krishna except Krishna. This verse shows the other side. Someone who asks for nothing is held closest of all. Bhakti, loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in, is a two-way sharing. The devotee gives the whole self, and Krishna declares that he holds that person dearer than anything else he has.

A father sits down to dinner with one warm roti left. He gives it to his child before himself, and the child is dearer to him than his own hunger. Krishna says the same of Uddhava, putting him ahead of every great name and ahead of his own self.

1. Tonight, sit quietly for five minutes and remember one person who was plainly glad to see you. 2. Read Krishna's words to Uddhava slowly, once, as spoken to a friend. Notice what you feel, and do not push it. 3. Tomorrow, give someone close to you one small thing first: the best seat, the warm tea, ten undivided minutes. Notice how it feels to put them ahead of yourself.

A boy of eleven sits alone at lunch on his first day at a new school. His mother packed his favourite food, but the hall is loud and nobody has looked his way. In that moment he is deciding what he is worth. Remembering that someone at home is waiting for him, and glad of him without conditions, is what lets him stay at the bench instead of leaving early. The verse carries this to its fullest. Krishna tells Uddhava that he is dearer to him than Brahma, Shiva, Lakshmi or Krishna's own self. That is the text's teaching about the love Krishna holds for his devotee. Ordinary experience agrees on one point. A person who knows they are valued by someone stands more steadily among strangers. The verse does not promise the hall will turn friendly, that the boy will be chosen for a team, or that loneliness will not sting. Nor does it replace a real friend, a teacher, or a doctor when someone is struggling badly. It gives the boy a place to stand while the day is still hard.
