When the night was over, Vishvamitra rose, said goodbye to both kings, and went away to the northern mountain. Dasharatha, lord of Ayodhya, took his leave and turned for home. As each of his daughters left her rooms, King Janaka gave her a splendid dowry: rugs and fine silks, chariots, elephants, horses and foot soldiers, all beautifully turned out. He gave them skilled maids to dress them and young servants they could trust. He gave his beloved girls silver and coral, gold and pearls. When the gifts had all been given, he saw his guest off on the road. Then the lord of Mithila rode back to his own court and stepped down from his chariot. The wedding was over, and his daughters were gone.
Dasharatha set out in high spirits. The seers led the way, his sons rode beside him, and the royal army marched behind. But as they went, he began to hear birds crying all around them, birds whose calls meant nothing good. And every animal in the forest ran past them in a wild panic, always on the right. The king turned to Vasishtha. "What is about to happen to us? Why are the animals running in terror, and why are these birds of bad omen crying? Something is shaking my heart, and I can't calm my mind." Vasishtha answered him gently. "Listen, and I'll tell you what it means. The birds are warning that great danger is coming to the army. But the animals moving to the right say it will pass. So let your fear go."
Even as they spoke, a storm burst out of the sky. The wide earth shook, and tall trees were torn up and flung across the plain. The sun went dark behind thick cloud, a shroud spread over the heavens, and a veil of dust and ash came down on the army until the men were faint with fear. Only the king, the princes and the sages kept their senses. Everyone else stood frozen. When at last their wits came back, they saw, in the gloom beneath that ashen sky, the son of Jamadagni. His long hair was twisted up around his head. He came from Bhrigu's line, and he loved to crush the proudest kings under his feet. He stood as firm as Kailasa, and he blazed like the fire at the end of the world.
His axe rested on his shoulder and his bow was ready, with arrows that flew like lightning from an angry sky. He drew out one long, sharp arrow, as unstoppable as the ones Shiva shot to destroy Tripura. Vasishtha and the sages, men whose lives were sacrifice and quiet prayer, drew close together and whispered. "Is he still raging over his father's death? Will he turn on the warriors and wipe out their whole race again? But long ago, seas of their blood cooled his anger. Surely he doesn't mean to kill every warrior in the land now." Then they went to him with a gift of welcome and softly called his name, "Rama, Rama." He took the gift and said nothing. Then he broke his silence and spoke to the other Rama.
"Rama, everyone talks about your fame. I've heard what you did with the bow. You bent it and broke it, which is hard to believe. So I came to find you, and I've brought a bow of my own. It belonged to my father, the great Jamadagni. Draw it, fit its arrow, and show me your strength. Then we'll fight, one against one, and that will make your name greater still." Dasharatha heard this with dread. Pale, his eyes frightened, he raised his hands and pleaded. "You put that old blood feud behind you and gave yourself to penance. Brahmin, let my children be. You swore to the Thousand-eyed god and threw your axe aside. You left the earth to Kashyapa and went to live in a grove under Mahendra's peak. Have you come to destroy us now? If my Rama falls, we all die with him."
The old father begged, but Jamadagni's son did not even answer him. He spoke only to Rama. "The heavenly craftsman made two bows, divine and matchless, honoured in every world. One was given to Shiva, the Three-eyed God, and with it he killed Tripura. That is the bow you broke. The highest gods gave the second to Vishnu, and this is the one I hold. Nothing stands against it, not walls and not towers. Then the gods asked the Sire Most High to find out for certain who was stronger, Vishnu or Shiva, the god whose throat is stained blue. So he set the two against each other, and the fight was terrible. But Vishnu let out a great cry, Shiva's bowstring went slack, and Shiva stood frozen in fury and surprise."
"The gods, sages and heavenly singers begged them to stop, and the two made peace. Everyone had seen Shiva's bow fail against Vishnu, so they gave Vishnu first place. In anger, Shiva gave his bow to Devarat, king of Videha, to pass down his line. Vishnu lent this bow to the great Richika, and my father Jamadagni inherited it. But Arjuna killed my father by treachery, a man whose penance had made him mighty. Ever since, my rage has fallen on the warrior race, generation after generation. I conquered the whole earth and gave it to Kashyapa as his fee for a sacrifice, then went back to Mahendra. There I heard the gods talking of your deed, and came at once. Take this bow. Draw it to the head with one arrow. If you can, I'll fight you."
Rama heard the challenge without flinching. Respect for his father held back the full force of his anger. "I've heard before what you did long ago," he said. "Out of pity I let it go, because your father was murdered and you owed him that debt. But you think my strength too small for a warrior. Now you'll see it." With easy grace he took the bow and the arrow, strung the bow, and laid the arrow on the string. Then he looked at Jamadagni's son and spoke in fury. "You are a Brahmin, and I owe you honour, for Vishvamitra's sake too. I won't shoot to kill you. But I will take either your power to travel freely, won by penance, or the shining worlds you've earned. Vishnu's arrow, once drawn, never falls in vain. It strikes down the proud."
The gods gathered in the sky, led by the Sire Most High, with nymphs, singers, serpent gods, spirits and bards, all staring down at Rama and the bow. The world went still. Jamadagni's son, stunned and powerless, spoke low and weak. "When I gave the earth to Kashyapa, he told me never to stay in his kingdom, so I never rest on earth at night. Son of Raghu, leave me my power to travel, so I can reach Mahendra faster than thought. Take the worlds I won by penance instead. I know you are the Lord of the Gods, who killed Madhu. There's no shame in losing to you. Shoot." The arrow flew, and those worlds were closed to him. The sky cleared, and the gods praised Rama. Jamadagni's son praised him too, walked around him in reverence, and flew away to rest on Mahendra.
