At first light, King Dasharatha called his charioteer Sumantra while priests and nobles stood around him. "Let my treasurers ride at the front today, with plenty of gold and jewels," he said. "Send out a great army of foot soldiers, chariots, elephants and horses, and have the finest carriages and horses ready for me. Vasishtha, Vamadeva, old Markandeya, Jabali, Kashyapa and wise Katyayana will lead the way. And you, Sumantra, yoke a chariot for me now. Janaka's messengers are urging me to hurry, and I won't keep them waiting." So the king set out, with the fourfold army behind him and the priests at its head. They travelled for four days, and as evening fell on the fourth, the kingdom of Videha lay before them.

Janaka came out to meet him. "Welcome, best of kings. Good fortune has brought you here. Your sons will be a joy to your eyes. And I am fortunate too, because Vasishtha comes to me surrounded by great sages, like Indra among the gods. My enemies are defeated, and my house gains honour by joining the line of Raghu. Tomorrow at first light my sacrifice will be complete. Then, with your blessing and the sages', you will see Rama married." Dasharatha, always graceful in speech, answered him. "I have long known that a gift belongs to the one who gives it. Whatever you ask of us, we will do as far as we can." Janaka was delighted by this answer and full of wonder at it. Old friends among the sages met again after long years apart, and the night passed in deep contentment.

That night Rama and Lakshmana came with Vishvamitra and bent down to touch their father's feet. The old king was overjoyed to see his dear sons again, and he rested happily, cared for by Janaka's hospitality. Janaka saw first to his daughters' needs, ordered everything for the wedding to be hurried along, and then he too went to sleep. In the morning, after his rites were done, Janaka spoke to the priest Shatananda. "My younger brother Kushadhvaja lives in Sankashya. It is a lovely town on the Ikshumati river, whose waters wash the foot of its walls, and it is as splendid as the sky-chariot Pushpaka. He is the guardian of my sacrifice. I want him here, so that he has his share of this happiness." Messengers raced off on the fastest horses, and Kushadhvaja agreed at once and hurried to Mithila.

Kushadhvaja bowed to Janaka and to Shatananda and took a seat fit for kings. Then the two brothers sent for their chief counsellor, Sudaman. "Go and bring the king of Ayodhya here, with both his sons, his sages, his ministers and his nobles." Sudaman hurried to Dasharatha and bowed his head. "King of Ayodhya, my lord the king of Mithila would like to see you, along with your guide and your priest, if you agree." Dasharatha came at once to Janaka's hall with his whole company. "You know, King, that the sage Vasishtha guards our line," he said. "Whatever happens, he speaks for all of us. If Vishvamitra and the other sages allow it, he will speak now." Vasishtha, a skilled speaker, rose and began to recite the line of Ikshvaku.

"From unseen Nature rose Brahma, who never changes and never ends. His son was Marichi, and Marichi's son was Kashyapa. Kashyapa's son was Vivasvat, and Vivasvat's son was Manu, who gave life to mortals. Manu's son Ikshvaku was the first king of Ayodhya. King followed king after him, down to Asita. Asita fought long wars against the Haihayas, the Talajanghas and the Sasivindus. In the end he lost, and he fled to the Himalaya with his two wives, and he died there. Both wives were pregnant. One of them feared her rival and slipped poison into her food. That other queen, lotus-eyed Kalindi, went to the sage Chyavana, who was staying in those mountains, and begged him for a noble son. 'Don't cry any more,' he told her. 'A strong and fortunate child will be born to you, and he will be born together with the poison.'"

"She bore a son, and because her rival's poison was meant to destroy him before he was born, she named him Sagara. From Sagara the line ran on through Asamanja, Anshuman, Dilipa, Bhagiratha, Kakutstha and Raghu. Then came Kalmashapada, named for the spots on his feet, and after him many kings down to Nabhaga. Nabhaga's son was Aja, and Aja's son is Dasharatha, the father of Rama and Lakshmana, who stand here before you. Every one of these kings came of pure blood, kept to what was right, and never told a lie. In the names of Rama and Lakshmana, I ask for your daughters as their wives, so that each matchless young man has a matchless bride." Janaka answered humbly. "Listen to my own line, holy sage. A king who gives away his daughter should show where he comes from."

"Our line began with Nimi, the most truthful of kings. His son was Mithi, and Mithi's son was the first Janaka to rule this land. King followed king down to Hrasvaroma, who had two sons. I am the elder, and Kushadhvaja is the younger. Our father crowned me, told me to look after my brother, and went to live in the forest. I carried that burden as the law requires, and I have loved Kushadhvaja dearly all my life. Then Sudhanva, the lord of Sankashya, laid siege to us. He demanded Shiva's great bow, and he demanded Sita too. I refused him both. Our armies met in a fierce battle, and I killed Sudhanva with my own hand. Then I made my brother king in his place. Now, great sage, I gladly give Sita to Rama and Urmila to Lakshmana."

"First, King, give the gift of cows as the dowry for each bride. Make the offerings to your ancestors, and then hold the wedding. Tonight the moon is in Magha. On the third night it will be in the second Phalguni. Let that be the day." Then Vishvamitra spoke, with Vasishtha beside him. "No one can measure the glory of Ikshvaku's line, or of yours. These couples are well matched. But listen. Your brother Kushadhvaja has two very beautiful daughters. I ask for them for Bharata and Shatrughna, who are brave, wise and noble. Let Ikshvaku's house be joined to yours through them as well." Janaka raised his hands. "My family is truly blessed. So be it. My two nieces will marry Bharata and Shatrughna, and all four princes will be married on the same day, the last day of Phalguni, the luckiest day there is."

Janaka then offered the two sages his throne. "I am your pupil," he said. "Dasharatha rules here just as he rules Ayodhya." Dasharatha thanked him and went back to his lodging to make the offerings to his ancestors. The next morning he gave away cows, a hundred thousand for each son and four hundred thousand in all. Every cow had gilded horns and a calf at her side, and the Brahmins shared them. That same day Yudhajit, son of the king of Kekaya and Bharata's uncle, arrived because his father longed to see Bharata, and Dasharatha welcomed him warmly. The next morning, at the lucky hour called Victory, Rama and his three brothers stood beside their father in fine clothes. Vasishtha went to Janaka. "The king and his sons are waiting for the one who gives the brides." Janaka answered, "Who is stopping you? This kingdom is yours. The maidens are already at the altar, shining like fire. Why wait any longer?"

Vasishtha, Vishvamitra and Shatananda built the altar, laid fresh flowers on it, and made the offering into the flame. Janaka led Sita to the fire to stand facing Rama. "Here is my daughter Sita, to share your life. Take her hand. She will follow you like your own shadow." He sprinkled her with holy water, and the gods and sages cried, "It is well." Then Janaka gave Urmila to Lakshmana, Mandavi to Bharata and Srutakirti to Shatrughna. "Be gentle and true to your wives," he told them. Holding their brides' hands, the princes circled the fire three times, and around Janaka and the sages too, while flowers rained from the sky, heavenly music played and nymphs danced. Then the princes led their brides to the palace Janaka had prepared. The king, surrounded by his sages and nobles, followed close behind, still watching them fondly.
