Therefore, dear friend, in every way hold the mind in check with a steady intellect, joined to me and fixed in me. This much is the whole of yoga in brief. Whoever, with a gathered mind, carries this song of the mendicant, which rests in Brahman, or recites it, or listens to it, is not overpowered by the pairs of opposites.
Krishna ends the mendicant's story with a conclusion for Uddhava. The word for restrain is nigrihana, from grah, to seize or take hold. It means taking the reins, not smashing the horse. The instruction is to do this sarvatmana, with the whole self, and dhiya, with a settled intellect. The mind is held by being set in Krishna, which is the meaning of mayyaveshita, entered or placed in me. The commentators read it this way: the restraint works by giving the mind something to rest in. Then comes yoga-sangraha, the gathering or summary of yoga. Krishna calls this one act the sum of it. The song is brahma-nishtha, resting in Brahman, the one reality the mendicant leaned on. Krishna names three ways to take it in: hold it in memory, tell it, or hear it. The fruit is that dvandva, the pairs of opposites such as pleasure and pain, honour and insult, no longer overpower the one who carries it. The reason lies in the story. The mendicant was robbed and spat on and stayed unshaken, because he had traced his sorrow to the mind and not to the people around him. Uddhava is about to be left without his friend. Krishna gives him the same tool, so that his steadiness will not depend on Krishna being there.
A restless horse bucks when hauled by the bridle, but walks quietly when led toward its own stable, where it knows the hay and the water. The mind is the horse. Krishna is the stable. Holding the mind means giving it a home to move toward.
1. Choose one ordinary irritation today, such as a slow queue, a curt message or a late bus. 2. When it stings, pause for three breaths and say silently the name of Krishna, or one line you love from this song. 3. Notice whether the sting is in the event or in the story your mind is telling about it. 4. In the evening, read this song's verses aloud once, slowly, to yourself or to someone near you.
A taxi driver sits in a jam when a passenger snaps at him that he is useless and slow. His jaw tightens, his hands grip the wheel, and he rehearses sharp replies. The verse would change this moment in steps. He first notices the heat rising, which is the mind pulling at the reins. He then turns it toward something steady that he loves, in the tradition's terms Krishna, and lets the words pass without feeding them. The insult stays an insult, but it stops running the next hour. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind with somewhere to rest recovers faster from a sharp word than one with nothing to turn to. The limit is plain. The verse does not make the passenger kind, does not remove the hurt of being spoken to that way, and does not replace a doctor for anyone whose anger, low mood or racing thoughts have grown beyond what a quiet practice can carry.
