Ruined, and past all weariness, he left home and wandered the earth. Scorned even by the wicked, he did not shake from his own dharma, and the sage sang this song: No one else gives a person joy or sorrow. It is the self's own bewilderment. Friend, stranger, enemy, and this whole round of wandering, all are made by darkness.

Krishna tells Uddhava what the mendicant of Avanti did and then what he sang. The first half is the ordeal told plainly. The brahmin lost his wealth and went out as a wanderer. Insulted even by wicked men, he stayed with his own duty, which is svadharma, the path that is properly one's own. Then comes the song. Atmavibhrama is the self's bewilderment, from vi and bhram, to whirl about wrongly. The mendicant says no other person hands us joy or sorrow. The mind that is bewildered does the handing out. Tamas is darkness, the dimness of not seeing clearly. In that dimness we sort people into friend, neutral and enemy. Samsara is the round of becoming, from sam and sri, to flow on together. The mendicant says that sorting, and the unrest it feeds, comes from darkness. He does not say people never help or harm. He says the lasting weight of those labels is laid on by our own confusion. Krishna tells this because Uddhava is about to be left without him, and a heart that depends on others for peace will break. The verse asks the listener to notice who is being called a foe, and to ask whether the dimness is doing the naming.

A coat hangs on a bedroom door in the dark and looks exactly like a man standing there. The heart pounds and the fear is real. Someone switches on the lamp, and the intruder is cloth. In the same way, the song says the friends and enemies that stir us so are shaped partly by our own dimness.

1. Today, when someone irritates or slights you, stop for the length of three slow breaths before answering. 2. Ask once: what am I adding to what they actually did or said? 3. Tonight, write one name you call an enemy and one you call a friend. Beside each, write one thing you do not know about their day. 4. Notice whether the names feel quite as fixed afterwards.

A woman arrives at a cousin's wedding and sees the relative she has not spoken to in years across the hall. Her stomach tightens, her jaw sets, and she has already decided the evening is spoiled. The mendicant's song would change that moment in steps. First she sees that the tightening is her own and rose before a word was said. Then she sees that 'enemy' is a label she carries in, and the cousin may be carrying the same one. Then she can walk over and say hello, or stay where she is, without her peace depending on what the cousin does. Ordinary experience confirms part of this: a hungry, tired person reads hostility into plain faces. The song does not promise the cousin will be kind, or that old hurts were imagined. Real wrongs stay real, and where someone is unsafe, keeping away from them is sensible. What the text teaches is that the sorrow's source sits in the bewildered mind, not in the other person, and that this is where the work lies.
