No pair of opposites, from anyone, anywhere, in any way, stains the Self that stands beyond the highest. One who has woken is not frightened by creatures, whatever frightens the one who calls the body-bound life 'I'. Resting in this devotion to the Supreme Self, which the ancient great sages kept, I shall cross the dark that is hard to cross, by serving Mukunda's feet alone.
Three words carry it. Dvandva means 'the pairs', from dvi, two: heat and cold, praise and insult, gain and loss. Uparaga means a colouring or staining, the way an eclipse darkens the sun without changing it. Mukunda is a name of Krishna, the giver of release. In Krishna's retelling, the mendicant of Avanti has just argued that people, planets, karma and time do not cause his joy and sorrow. Now he says where that leaves the Self. No person, place or circumstance can stain it with the pairs. The commentators read the middle comparison with care: the one who clings to a life of wandering from birth to birth is afraid, and the one who has woken is not. Fear of other beings belongs to that clinging, and it falls away when the clinging does. The last lines turn from argument to song. He has been mocked, robbed and spat on, and he does not claim to cross by his own strength. He takes the path the old sages walked, steady in the Supreme Self, and he names the means: serving Mukunda's feet. It is taught here because the question underneath the whole song is how to live among people who hurt us. His answer is that the hurt reaches the mind's colouring, never the Self, and that devotion carries him over.
Rain lashes a window all night, and the glass is cold and streaked, yet the room inside stays dry. The weather works on the pane. It never enters the room. The pairs press on the surface of a life, and the Self is the dry room within.
1. Today, when someone's remark stings, stop before answering and count five slow breaths. 2. Silently name what is happening: 'heat', 'insult', 'worry'. Notice that it is something passing through you, not you. 3. Before sleep, spend two minutes remembering Krishna by whatever name you use, Mukunda if you like, and hand the day's stings to him. 4. Notice whether the same remark weighs less the next morning.
A man stands at a wedding buffet while a neighbour tells the table, loudly, that he never repaid a loan. His face goes hot and his hands shake. He wants to answer in kind. The verse, as the mendicant sings it, would change the next minute in steps. First, the heat is seen as the pair at work, insult against honour, and not as a verdict on who he is. Second, the fear of the people watching loosens, because what they think cannot reach the Self. Third, he can speak plainly, or stay silent, from steadiness rather than from fright. Ordinary experience confirms that the body's alarm fades if it is not fed, and that words chosen after it fades are usually better. The text's own claim goes further: the Self is untouched, and devotion to Mukunda carries one across. The limit is plain. The verse does not make the insult untrue or the loan disappear. It does not take away embarrassment, and it does not replace a conversation with a lawyer or a doctor where one is needed. A racing heart that will not settle is a matter for a physician.
