Meaning · English

If deeds are the cause of pleasure and pain, what are they to the self? One is lifeless, the other aware. The body is without awareness, and the one who dwells in it is the bird within. At whom could anger be turned? Deeds are not the root. If time is the cause, what is that to the self, which is not made of time? Fire is not burned by heat, nor ice by cold. The pairs belong to another. At whom would one be angry?

The mendicant of Avanti, in Krishna's retelling, keeps ruling out blame, one suspect at a time. Here he turns to two: karma and kala. Karma is past action and its results. Kala is time. Some say they hand out our joy and sorrow. The key words are these. Karma comes from kri, to do: a deed and what follows it. Kala is time, the thing that carries events along. Dvandva means a pair, such as heat and cold, or pleasure and pain. His first answer: karma is lifeless, like the body. The one who is aware, the purusha, which the song calls the bird in the body, is a different kind of thing. A lifeless thing cannot be the real root of an aware one's suffering. So karma is not the root, and there is nobody to be angry at. His second answer: if time were the cause, the self would have to be made of time. It is not. Fire is not scorched by its own heat, and ice is not chilled by its own cold. The pairs belong to what is other than the self, so anger has no one to land on. The question behind the song is how a man robbed and spat on can stay unmoved. He cannot find anyone worth hating, not even the invisible causes. The song asks the listener to see that suffering's cause is looked for in the wrong place.

A candle flame sits in a draught-free room. A finger held over it is burned, but the flame itself feels no scorching from its own heat. The heat is real, yet it works on something other than the flame. In the same way, the song says the pairs of pleasure and pain press on the body, while the one who dwells within is not made of them.

1. Tonight, pick one small misfortune from this week, such as a missed bus or a harsh word. 2. Ask where you have been placing the blame: on your past deeds, on bad timing, or on a person. Write the answer in one line. 3. Sit for two minutes and ask whether that cause really explains the sting you felt. Notice whether the anger has anywhere left to go. 4. Say nothing about it to anyone until morning.

A woman opens her small tailoring shop after a night of flooding. The machines are soaked and a month of cloth is ruined. Within minutes she is saying it is her bad luck, or the wrong year, or something she must have done. Each guess feels like an explanation, and each adds a weight to the loss. The song would have her notice what she is doing: reaching for a cause so that her anger has an address. It teaches that deeds and time are not the true author of her suffering, and that the one who is aware is not made of the changing pairs. She can then name the loss as plainly as it is: water, cloth, money. The next steps are drying, counting and asking for help. Ordinary experience confirms that a story of blame does not shrink the damage and often makes the night longer. The song does not promise the loss will feel small, nor that the shop will be restored. Grief at ruined work is still grief, and a person in real distress should turn to family, neighbours and a doctor if sleep or health fails.
