If the self were the cause of pleasure and pain, what would be left to say, since that would be its own nature? Nothing is other than the self. If anything were other, it would be false. Then why be angry, when neither pleasure nor pain is there? If the planets are the cause, what is that to the unborn self? They say a planet torments a planet. The person is other than these. At whom, then, should he be angry?

The mendicant of Avanti, in his song as Krishna retells it, is going through his accusers one by one. Here he takes two: the self, and the planets. First the self. The word is atman, the one who is aware in each of us. If atman caused pleasure and pain, they would be its own nature, like heat belonging to fire. Then there would be no one else to blame. And nothing stands apart from atman. Whatever seems to stand apart is mrisha, false, in the sense of not having a standing of its own. So there is no outside attacker to be angry at, and the pleasure and pain are not the self's own state either. Then the planets, the grahas. Suppose the stars cause our pain. The self is unborn, and planets are born things. The mendicant says people speak of one planet afflicting another, meaning body afflicting body. The person who knows is other than them, so the affliction does not reach him. The commentators read both halves as closing off the last places anger might settle. Why teach this to a man who has been spat on? Because anger needs a culprit. The mendicant removes culprits one at a time, and anger has nowhere left to stand.

On a white wall at dusk, the shadows of passing cars sweep across, bright and dark in turn. The wall is not scratched or stained by any of them. The self, in this teaching, is the wall: what crosses it belongs to the body and its circumstances, and the wall itself stays unmarked.

1. Next time you catch yourself blaming a bad day on a person, a date, or a star sign, stop for one minute. 2. Say aloud, or write, exactly what happened, with no cause attached: "The bus was late. I felt tight in the chest." 3. Notice what is left of the anger once the blame has been taken out. 4. Repeat this once a day for a week, and see which blames you reach for most.

A woman sits in a hospital waiting room after a month of bad news. Her aunt phones to say Saturn is in a poor position and the family should expect trouble. She feels a flash of anger, first at Saturn, then at her aunt, then at herself. The mendicant's song would slow that moment down. The planets are named as a cause, and the song answers that the one who knows is not the planet's kind of thing, so blame has nothing to hold. The anger loses its first target. With the target gone, she can see what is actually in front of her: a tired body, a hard month, and a call that stirred fear. She can answer her aunt kindly and go on sitting. Ordinary experience confirms one part of this: blame often gives quick relief and leaves the real problem where it was. The verse does not promise that illness will lift or that the news will turn. It does not replace the doctors she is waiting for. It only takes away one extra weight of resentment she was about to carry in with her.
