Beyond Learning and Power

Katha Upanishad 1.2.25

Meaning · English

For him the priestly power and the warrior power are both a meal, and death is only the relish poured over it. Who, then, really knows where he is?

Three words carry it. Brahma is the priestly, learned power. Kshatra is the ruling, fighting power. Together they stand for wisdom and strength, what a society leans on most. Odana is plain boiled rice, a meal. Upasecana is what is poured over the meal, a relish that helps it go down. Yama says that for this one, learning and force are the meal, and death is only the seasoning. Nothing the world prizes can hold him, and death does not end him. The one Yama points to is the Self, the inmost knower in a person. Then comes the question: who really knows where he is? Yama is answering Nachiketas, who has just heard that cleverness cannot reach the Self. The reason is given here. What learning and power touch is food to this one, so neither can catch him. The question is not despair. It says ordinary ways of knowing cannot locate him. The boy is asked to stop trusting rank, scholarship and strength to carry him there. Shankara reads the one described as the Self, and the question as meaning that only a person with the calm and purity named just before can know it.

A woman feeds a big hearth fire. A heavy oak beam goes in, then a bundle of twigs. Both vanish, and the fire does not ask which was grander. Learning and power are the beam and the twigs. The Self is the fire that takes them, not another log.

1. Tonight, take five minutes and write down three things you lean on to feel secure: a title, a skill, a sum of money. 2. Beside each, write what becomes of it in a long illness or at the end of life. 3. Sit quietly for one minute with the list. You need no answer. Just notice which items feel loose. 4. Tomorrow, when someone with rank or learning speaks to you, notice whether you shrink or swell, and let it pass.

A retired judge sits in a hospital corridor, waiting for a scan result. At home, people stood when he entered a room. Here a clerk calls out numbers, and his number is forty-one. He feels the old title fall away, and he is frightened. The verse speaks to that moment in steps. First, it names what he is feeling: the things he leaned on were never what held him. Yama tells Nachiketas that learning and authority are only food to the Self, and death is the seasoning. Second, it lets the question stay open. He does not have to settle what he is while he waits. Third, it turns his attention from the rank he lost to the one who is present in the corridor, aware and sitting on a plastic chair. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: waiting makes people of every station look alike. The verse does not soften the result, calm the fear on demand, or replace the doctor who will read the scan.
