Lightning, Seasons and Seas
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.4
Meaning · English
You are the dark-blue bird, the green one with red eyes, the cloud holding lightning, the seasons and the seas. Without beginning you pervade all; all worlds come from you.
The naming moves past people to birds, weather and water: a dark-blue bird, a green parrot with red eyes, a storm cloud carrying lightning inside it, the turning seasons, the oceans. Each one is called the same One. Two claims follow. First, this One has no starting point; nothing came before it. Second, it pervades. It is not one item standing beside the others. It is present all through them. The worlds are not made next to it. They are born out of it.
Picture a string of beads: deep blue, bright green, a few red, some glass, some wood. Each bead looks like its own small object. Run a finger along the strand and one thread passes through every bead. The beads are the bird, the parrot, the cloud and the seasons. The thread is the One running through them all.
