Meaning · English
I worship Achyuta, Keshava, Rama, Narayana, Krishna, Damodara, Vasudeva, Hari, Shridhara, Madhava, the beloved of the gopis, Janaki's lord, Ramachandra.
It is a list of names with one verb at the very end: I worship. Achyuta means the one who does not slip or fall away. Keshava is the one with fine hair. Damodara is Krishna as a small boy, tied at the waist with a rope by his mother. Shridhara is the one who holds Shri, good fortune. The names move freely between Krishna, loved by the cowherd girls, and Rama, husband of Sita, as if calling one person by every name he answers to.
Think of a grandmother in a family. One grandchild calls her Nani, a neighbour calls her by her first name, her husband uses a name from when they were young. Each name holds a different memory of her, yet all of them reach the same woman. The names in the hymn do the same for one god.
