Held Fast in Mind

Achyutashtakam 2

Meaning · English

I hold in my mind Achyuta, Keshava, Satyabhama's husband, Madhava, bearer of Shri, the one Radha adored, Lakshmi's home, lovely to the heart, Devaki's son, Nanda's son.

The list keeps its rhythm, but the ending changes. The singer does not just praise. He settles this person in his mind and keeps him there. Achyuta is the one who never slips. He is loved from more than one side: Satyabhama is his wife, Radha adores him, and Lakshmi makes him her home. Then two families claim him at once. Devaki bore him, and Nanda's household raised him. The mind does not pick one. It keeps them all in view.

At a family wedding, one man gets called three ways. His wife uses his name, his mother calls him son, and the aunt who raised him uses a childhood nickname. He turns to each voice. The names here work the same way: each comes from someone close, and all point to one face.
