Meaning · English
To Vishnu, victorious, who holds conch and discus, who loves Rukmini, Janaki's husband, beloved of the cowherd women, the worshipped, the Self, Kamsa's destroyer, the flute-player: to you I bow.
Each word is a name for the same one. Vishnu, the victorious. Holder of the conch and the discus. The one who loves Rukmini, his queen as Krishna. The husband of Janaki, who is Sita, so Rama stands in the same line. The darling of the cowherd women. The one who is worshipped, and also the very Self. The one who ended the tyrant Kamsa. The flute-player. Every name takes the same form, 'to you', and the line closes with a single bow.
Think of a temple garland: marigold, then jasmine, then a rose, then a sprig of tulsi. Each flower is different, but all are threaded on one string and tied off with one knot. The names are the flowers: warrior, husband, cowherd's darling, flute-player. The 'to you' on each is the string, and the closing bow is the knot.
