Calling Without Asking
Achyutashtakam 4
Meaning · English
Krishna, Govinda, Rama, Narayana, Lord of Shri, Vasudeva, the unconquered, treasure of Shri; Achyuta, endless one, Madhava, beyond the senses, lord of Dvaraka, guardian of Draupadi.
Nothing is asked and nothing is said about him. Every word is a call. Some names point to what cannot be measured: Ajita, never defeated; Achyuta, the one who never slips from his place; Ananta, without end; Adhokshaja, beyond what the senses can reach. Then the line comes down to earth: lord of one city, Dvaraka, and protector of one woman, Draupadi. The vast and the near sit side by side in one breath.
A small child, lost for a moment in a busy market, calls out: Mum, Mama, Mother, again and again. There is no request yet, only the calling. The child does not settle on one name, because any of them might carry. The string of names works the same way: each is another reach toward one who is listening.
