Rama's Forest Years
Achyutashtakam 5
राक्षसक्षोभितः सीतया शोभितो दण्डकारण्यभूपुण्यताकारणः । लक्ष्मणेनान्वितो वानरैः सेवितोऽगस्त्यसंपूजितो राघवः पातु माम्
Meaning · English
Roused by the demons, graced by Sita, he made Dandaka forest holy ground; Lakshmana beside him, monkeys serving him, Agastya honoring him. May Raghava protect me.
Rama's years of exile go by in a few quick strokes. Demons troubled him, and he was stirred to fight them. Sita at his side lent him grace. The Dandaka forest, a wild and feared place, became sacred because he walked through it. His brother Lakshmana went with him, the monkey army served him, and the sage Agastya received him with worship. Each phrase is a scene from the Ramayana. Then the line turns to one plain request: may Raghava, Rama of the Raghu family, protect me.
Picture a reference letter with several signatures at the bottom: a brother, a crew of coworkers, a respected old teacher. Each name adds weight before anyone reads the request it supports. Sita, Lakshmana, the monkeys and Agastya stand behind Rama the same way, and only after them comes the ask to be kept safe.
