The Cowherd Boy Protects

Meaning · English
Slayer of Dhenuka and Arishta, bane of those who hate, killer of Keshi, taker of Kamsa, flute-player, scourge of Putana, playing by the Yamuna. Young cowherd, guard me always.
The line runs through Krishna's childhood in Vraja as a string of nicknames. Dhenuka, Arishta and Keshi were demons who came as a donkey, a bull and a horse. Putana was the woman sent to poison him as a baby. Kamsa was the tyrant king. Between these fights sit two gentle pictures: the boy playing his flute, and splashing in the Yamuna, called the Sun's daughter. The same child does both. Then comes the request: may this young cowherd protect me, at all times.
Picture an older boy on the school bus who hums along to his music and jokes with the little kids, then stands up straight the moment someone picks on one of them. The younger children feel safe sitting near him because the easy laughter and the firm stand belong to the same person.
