Storm Cloud and Lightning
Achyutashtakam 7
Meaning · English
I worship the lotus-eyed one, his garment flashing like lightning, his body glowing like a monsoon cloud, his chest bright with a wildflower garland, his two feet red.
A portrait, built from the colours of the rainy season. His clothing flickers bright, like lightning against a dark sky. His body is dark, the deep blue-grey of a cloud heavy with monsoon rain. Across his chest hangs a garland of wild flowers, picked in the woods, not bought. His two feet are reddish, and his eyes are shaped like lotus petals. The line ends plainly: I worship him. Nothing is asked for.
Think of someone holding an old photo of a person they love. They do not glance and set it down. Their thumb moves over it: the shirt, the necklace, the shoes, then back to the eyes. The hymn looks at him the same way, lingering on each detail, with attention as the offering.
