कुञ्चितैः कुन्तलैर्भ्राजमानाननं रत्नमौलिं लसत्कुण्डलं गण्डयोः । हारकेयूरकं कङ्कणप्रोज्ज्वलं किङ्किणीमञ्जुलं श्यामलं तं भजे
Meaning · English
I worship the dark one: face bright amid curling locks, jeweled crown, earrings glinting on his cheeks, necklace, armlets, shining bangles, sweet little bells.
The singer looks at him slowly, from the top down. Curling hair falls around a face that shines. A crown set with gems sits above it. Earrings swing and flash against his cheeks. Lower down come the necklace, the bands on his upper arms, and the bangles bright at his wrists. Then a sound joins the sight: small bells on a waist-string, chiming sweetly as he moves. The dark-skinned one wearing all of this is the one the singer worships.
A mother dresses her small child for a festival. She smooths the curls, fixes each earring, slides on the bangles, ties the little bells, then steps back to look. She attends to every piece because each one matters to her. The hymn's slow list of ornaments works the same way. Lingering over details is how love looks at someone.

मैं उस साँवले को भजता हूँ: घुँघराले बालों के बीच दमकता मुख, रत्नजड़ित मुकुट, गालों पर झिलमिलाते कुंडल, हार, बाजूबंद, चमकते कंगन, मीठी-मीठी नन्ही घुँघरियाँ।
गायक उसे धीरे-धीरे, ऊपर से नीचे तक निहारता है। दमकते मुख के चारों ओर घुँघराले बाल बिखरे हैं। उसके ऊपर रत्नों से जड़ा मुकुट सजा है। कुंडल डोलते हैं और गालों पर चमक उठते हैं। उससे नीचे हार आता है, फिर भुजाओं पर बँधे बाजूबंद, और कलाइयों पर चमकते कंगन। फिर दृश्य के साथ एक ध्वनि भी आ मिलती है: करधनी में बँधी नन्ही घंटियाँ, जो उसके चलने पर मधुर स्वर में बजती हैं। यह सब पहने हुए जो साँवला है, उसी को गायक भजता है।
एक माँ किसी उत्सव के लिए अपने नन्हे बच्चे को सजाती है। वह उसकी लटें सँवारती है, एक-एक कुंडल ठीक करती है, कंगन पहनाती है, नन्ही घंटियाँ बाँधती है, फिर थोड़ा पीछे हटकर उसे निहारती है। वह हर एक गहने पर ध्यान देती है, क्योंकि उसके लिए हर एक का मोल है। स्तोत्र में आभूषणों की यह धीमी सूची भी इसी तरह काम करती है। बारीकियों पर ठहरना ही वह ढंग है जिससे प्रेम किसी को देखता है।
