The Hymn's Promise
Achyutashtakam 9
Meaning · English
Whoever reads this wish-granting, well-metred octet on Achyuta daily, with love and longing, finds that Hari, maker and bearer of the world, quickly comes under their sway.
The hymn now talks about itself. It calls itself an octet, eight verses on Achyuta, and says two things about it: it grants what a person wishes for, and its metre is beautiful. Then comes the reader. The reading happens every day, with love, and with real eagerness rather than as a routine. The last line turns things around. Hari makes the world and carries all of it, yet he quickly comes under the sway of that one person.
A porter who hauls heavy sacks all day can be pulled down to the floor by a toddler tugging his finger every evening. The child has no strength to move him. He goes because the tug comes daily and comes from love. The one who carries the world gives way to a loving, daily reader in the same manner.
