Homage to Rudra's Anger

Shukla Yajurveda 16.1

Meaning · English

Rudra, homage to your anger. Homage also to your arrow. And to your two arms, homage.

Rudra is the archer-god of the Veda, whose name was heard as 'the roarer'. The mantra bows first to his anger, then to the arrow that anger would loose, then to the arms that draw the bow. Nothing is asked yet. The worshipper greets the force that could strike, part by part, from the feeling to the hand. Later commentators read the anger as turned against what harms people, not against the one who bows.

A farmer walking up to a big bull in a field does not go straight to its side. He speaks first, quietly, from a distance, so the animal knows him before he nears its horns. The mantra does the same with Rudra: it names the anger, the arrow and the arms, and greets each before asking anything.
