The Gentle Form Requested
Shukla Yajurveda 16.2
Meaning · English
Rudra, that body of yours which is kind, not terrible, showing no evil: with that most peaceful body, dweller on the mountain, look upon us.
Rudra is the storm god of the Veda, feared for his arrows of sickness and death. The singer does not ask him to go away. He asks him to turn one particular body toward us. That body is kind, it is not frightening, and it shows nothing harmful. Sāyaṇa takes that last word as a form shining with merit, with no trace of sin. Rudra is called the mountain-dweller, which Sāyaṇa reads as the one who gives peace from the mountain. The request is to be looked at with that gentlest form.
Picture a grandfather who can thunder at a careless child from across the room, and an hour later is bent over that child's scraped knee, voice gone low. Nobody in the house wants a different grandfather. They hope for the second face. The prayer keeps the whole god and asks which side of him turns toward us.
