Lowering the Raised Arrow

Shukla Yajurveda 16.3

Meaning · English

Dweller on the mountain, the arrow you hold in your hand to shoot, make it kind, guardian of the mountain. Do not harm the person or the moving world.

The singer speaks to Rudra by two mountain names. He is the one who rests on the mountain, and the one who guards it. In his hand is an arrow, held ready to be loosed. The prayer does not ask him to put it down. It asks him to make it kind, so the same weapon turns toward good. Then the plain request: harm neither the person nor the moving world of living things. One old reading takes the first name as the mountain-dweller who spreads peace.

A dog handler at a gate holds a big guard dog on a short leash. The dog stays strong, its teeth still sharp, but the handler's hand decides whether that strength turns on a stranger or lies down by the door. The prayer asks the same of Rudra: keep the arrow, but turn its force toward care.
