Kind Words, Healthy World

Shukla Yajurveda 16.4

Meaning · English

With auspicious speech we speak toward you, Lord of the mountain, so that all this living world of ours may be free of sickness and of glad mind.

Rudra is the Vedic god of storm and wild places, feared for his arrows of sickness. The singers answer that fear with speech of their own: words that are auspicious, the same quality they hope to see in him. They call him lord of the mountain. The old commentators read the name as resting on the peak, and some read the mountain as speech itself. The hope is plain. The whole moving world should be free of wasting illness and settled in a glad mind.

A herder walks into a field of heavy cattle speaking low and steady, the same few words every time. The animals stay calm, and no one in the field gets hurt. The singers do the same with Rudra: they bring an even, kindly voice toward great strength, and what they hope follows is a whole world at ease and unharmed.
