The First Physician
Shukla Yajurveda 16.5
अध्यवोचदधिवक्ता प्रथमो दैव्यो भिषक्। अहींश्च सर्वान्जम्भयन्त्सर्वाश्च यातुधान्योऽधराचीः परा सुव ॥
Meaning · English
He has spoken for us, the advocate, the first physician of the gods. Crushing all serpents and all sorceresses, drive them down and away.
Rudra, the fierce god of storm and healing, is called the advocate, the one who speaks up on the worshipper's side. Commentators read the word two ways: one who pleads for us, or one who speaks with authority over all. He is also the first physician, the healer who comes before every other. The same power that could wound is now asked to turn on what harms: snakes, and the sorceresses who work hidden injury. 'Down and away' asks that these be pushed out of the worshipper's life.
A farm dog lies quietly among children and lambs, letting them climb over it, yet the same teeth bare at once when a fox comes to the fence. Its fierceness and its gentleness belong to one animal facing two directions. Rudra is pictured the same way: healer close to the household, crusher turned outward against what harms.

आँधी और आरोग्य के उग्र देवता रुद्र को अधिवक्ता कहा गया है, वह जो उपासक के पक्ष में बोलता है। टीकाकार इस शब्द को दो तरह से पढ़ते हैं: वह जो हमारे लिए पैरवी करता है, या वह जो सब पर अधिकार से बोलता है। वह पहला वैद्य भी है, वह चिकित्सक जो हर दूसरे से पहले आता है। जो शक्ति घाव दे सकती थी, उसी से अब कहा जाता है कि वह हानि पहुँचाने वालों की ओर मुड़े: साँप, और वे जादूगरनियाँ जो छिपी चोट पहुँचाती हैं। 'नीचे और दूर' यह माँगता है कि इन्हें उपासक के जीवन से बाहर धकेल दिया जाए।
