Seen by Herders and Water-Bearers

Shukla Yajurveda 16.7

Meaning · English

That one who glides down, blue-necked and deep red: the herders have seen him, the women who carry water have seen him. Seen, may he be gracious to us.

The singer points at Rudra: that one, moving downward, blue at the neck and red all over. The medieval commentators read him as the sun crossing the sky, red as it rises and sets. Later readers tie the blue throat to the poison he held there. The point is that he is not hidden. Herders out with cattle have seen him. Women carrying water have seen him. The last line asks that the one so plainly seen be gracious to us.

A streetlight comes on at dusk above a crowded road. The shopkeeper pulling down his shutter, the child on a bicycle and the man waiting for a bus all stand in the same light, and none of them needed permission to see it. Rudra is like that here: the fierce one is visible to anyone who looks up.
