Thousand Eyes and His Company
Shukla Yajurveda 16.8
Meaning · English
Homage be to the blue-necked one, the thousand-eyed, who pours down rain. And those who are his warriors, to them also I have offered homage.
Three names, then a widening. Rudra is blue-necked, his throat dark against a reddish body. He is thousand-eyed, so nothing anywhere escapes his seeing. He is the one who pours, as a cloud pours rain; Sāyaṇa takes it as pouring out what the worshipper asks for. Then the bow turns to his warriors, the band that moves with him. The singer asks them for nothing. He says the homage is already given, to the god and to all who belong to him.
At a village wedding, an elder arrives with a dozen relatives behind him. The host touches the elder's feet, then turns and folds his hands to each one in the line, down to the youngest cousin. No one at the gate goes unwelcomed. The bow to Rudra works the same way. It does not stop at him but reaches every one of his band.
