The Weapon at Rest

Shukla Yajurveda 16.14

Meaning · English

Homage to your weapon, undrawn and bold. And homage to your two arms, and to your bow.

The worshipper greets Rudra's weapon, but in a particular state: undrawn, not aimed, not fitted to the string. It is still called bold, able to overpower, so its strength is not denied. Sāyaṇa reads that boldness as the weapon's power to subdue; some later readers hear it as a name for Rudra himself. The greeting then moves to the two arms that could draw it, and to the bow. Each part of the archer is honoured separately, and honoured while still.

Picture a night watchman at a building gate, rifle slung on his shoulder, barrel pointing at the ground. Residents nod to him as they pass. Nobody pretends the rifle is a toy, yet nobody fears it either. The nod honours strength that is present and held back, the same regard the mantra gives the bow and arms.
