Lord of Trees and Roads

Shukla Yajurveda 16.17

नमो हिरण्यबाहवे सेनान्ये दिशां च पतये नमो नमो वृक्षेभ्यो हरिकेशेभ्यः पशूनां पतये नमो नमः शष्पिञ्जराय त्विषीमते पथीनां पतये नमो नमो हरिकेशायोपवीतिने पुष्टानां पतये नमः ॥

Meaning · English

Homage to the golden-armed commander, lord of the quarters; to green-haired trees, lord of beasts; to the grass-tawny, shining lord of paths; to the green-haired, thread-wearing lord of the thriving.

Each line gives Rudra a look and then a domain. With golden arms he leads the army, and the four directions belong to him. Next he is the trees themselves, their leaves his green hair, and he is lord of the animals. Tawny like fresh grass and glowing, he rules the roads people travel. Last, he wears the sacred thread like a householder and rules those who are well fed and flourishing. Sāyaṇa takes the trees as Rudra in tree form; others read them as his attendants.

Picture a banyan at a village crossroads. Cattle doze in its shade, travellers sit on its roots, its leaves hang green overhead, and the families nearby gather under it, fed and settled. The verse puts Rudra in that one spot: he is the tree, and he is lord of the animals, the road and the people around it.

नमन है सुनहरी भुजाओं वाले सेनानायक को, दिशाओं के स्वामी को; हरे केशों वाले वृक्षों को, पशुओं के स्वामी को; नई घास-से भूरे, दमकते मार्गों के स्वामी को; हरे केशों वाले, जनेऊधारी, समृद्धों के स्वामी को।

हर पंक्ति रुद्र को पहले एक रूप देती है और फिर एक क्षेत्र। सुनहरी भुजाओं से वह सेना की अगुवाई करता है, और चारों दिशाएँ उसी की हैं। अगली पंक्ति में वह स्वयं वृक्ष है, पत्ते उसके हरे केश हैं, और वह पशुओं का स्वामी है। नई घास-सा भूरा और दमकता हुआ, वह उन मार्गों पर राज करता है जिन पर लोग चलते हैं। अंत में वह गृहस्थ की तरह जनेऊ पहनता है और उन पर राज करता है जो भरपेट हैं और फल-फूल रहे हैं। सायण वृक्षों को वृक्ष-रूप रुद्र मानते हैं; दूसरे उन्हें उसके अनुचर समझते हैं।

गाँव के चौराहे पर खड़े एक बरगद की कल्पना कीजिए। उसकी छाँव में मवेशी ऊँघते हैं, राहगीर उसकी जड़ों पर बैठते हैं, उसके हरे पत्ते ऊपर झूलते हैं, और आसपास के परिवार भरे पेट और निश्चिंत होकर उसके नीचे जुटते हैं। यह मंत्र रुद्र को उसी एक जगह रखता है: वह वृक्ष है, और वह पशुओं, मार्ग और आसपास के लोगों का स्वामी है।
