Meaning · English
Homage to the cheat, the arch-cheat, lord of thieves; to the quiver-bearer, lord of robbers; to the armed who would kill, lord of plunderers; to night-prowling swordsmen, lord of cutthroats.
Rudra is the fierce god of the storm and the wild. Here he is hailed through the people a village fears most: the swindler, the robber with his quiver, the armed man looking for blood, the swordsman who moves at night. Each is greeted with homage, and Rudra is named lord over each band. Rudra is not praised as a thief. The point is that no one, however dark their work, stands outside his rule. Later commentators on the Yajurveda add that Rudra takes these forms in play.
Picture a full map of a city. It shows the temples and the markets, and it also shows the back lanes where no one walks after dark. Nothing has been cut out to make the place look better. The hymn draws Rudra's reach the same way, over the whole map, the dark lanes included.
