The Forest Fire

The story · English
In the forests of Vraj, the cowherd boys were often so absorbed in their games that they lost track of their livestock. One day, driven by a craving for fresh grass, the cows, the goats, and the buffaloes wandered far away from the boys. They ventured deep into a thicket of reeds, moving from one stretch of forest to another, their cries echoing through the trees as they searched for water to quench their thirst.
When Krishna, Balarāma, and the other boys realized the animals were missing, they were filled with anxiety. They began to search the wilderness, frantically looking for any sign of the herd. Eventually, they spotted the tracks of hooves printed in the grass, and the boys followed these marks through the brush, their minds clouded with worry as they chased the trail into the Munja forest.
There, they found the exhausted and thirsty cattle. Krishna called out to them in a voice as deep and resonant as a thundercloud, calling each animal by its own name. Overjoyed to hear the voice of their master, the animals turned back toward the boys. But suddenly, a great forest fire erupted around them. Driven by the wind, the flames became a towering wall of fire, consuming everything in its path—both the plants and the creatures that lived there.
Terrified by the approaching blaze, the boys and the cows turned to Krishna and Balarāma for protection, just as people flee to Hari when faced with the fear of death. They cried out, 'Krishna, O mighty one! Balarāma, O brave one! Please save us from this forest fire that threatens to consume us. We are your dependents and we depend entirely on you; surely your own kinsmen should not be allowed to perish.'
Hearing their plea, the Lord told them, 'Close your eyes; do not open them.' As they obeyed, Krishna opened his mouth and drank the entire forest fire, liberating everyone from the heat. When the boys opened their eyes and found themselves safe, they were astonished. After the danger passed, Krishna played his flute and led the cows and the boys back to the village. The Gopis were filled with supreme joy at the sight of Govinda, for a few moments without him had felt like a hundred ages.
