The story · English
Krishna returned to the village of Gokula, surrounded by his joyful kinsmen who sang his praises. He spent his days playing in the beauty of Vraja, appearing as a simple cowherd. The summer season arrived, but because the Lord was there, the land felt as fresh and vibrant as spring. In the forests of Vrindavan, the sound of waterfalls filled the air and groves of trees provided a constant, cool shade. The breeze carried the scent of Kahlara and Utpala flowers from the riverbanks. It was a sanctuary where the waves of the deep rivers kept the banks moist and muddy, so the fierce, poison-like sun could not dry up the earth's moisture or its grass, and the forests were alive with the songs of peacocks, bees, cuckoos and sarasa cranes.
One day, Krishna and Balarāma entered the woods with the other cowherds and their cattle. The boys, including Rama and Krishna, adorned themselves with coloured minerals, fresh leaves, garlands and bunches of peacock feathers. They spent their time dancing, wrestling, and singing. When Krishna danced, some of the boys sang, some played flutes or blew horns, and others praised him. In truth, gods disguised as cowherds praised Krishna and Rama as actors praise a fellow actor. The two brothers played games of strength—whirling, leaping, throwing, and pulling—and when the others danced, Rama and Krishna themselves sang, played music and cried out, 'Well done, well done!'
The boys played many games in the groves, by the rivers, and near the hills. Sometimes they played with bilva, kumbha and amalaka fruits, or at touch-not and blindfold games, and other times they mimicked the movements of birds and animals or swung from branches. While they were tending the cattle, a demon named Pralamba arrived. He had disguised himself as a cowherd to blend in, but his true intent was to carry off Rama and Krishna. Krishna, who sees all, recognized the demon immediately. Instead of striking him down instantly, Krishna decided to play along with the demon's disguise for a while, wondering how best to bring about the end of the intruder.
Krishna suggested a game to the group: they would pair off and compete against one another. The boys made Krishna and Rama the two team leaders; some took Krishna's side and others took Rama's. The game involved a challenge of strength; the losers would carry the winners on their shoulders. As they walked toward a great banyan tree called Bhandira, Rama's team—Sridama, Vrishabha and the others—won, so Krishna, having lost, carried Sridama, Bhadrasena carried Vrishabha, and Pralamba carried Balarāma. However, once the demon had Balarāma on his shoulders, Pralamba decided to make his move. He began to run away quickly, hoping to steal the son of Rohini far from the safety of his friends.
As Pralamba ran, he found he could not bear the weight of Balarāma. The demon grew massive, his form expanding like a dark rain-cloud. He revealed his true nature as he moved through the sky: a terrifying creature with blazing eyes, knitted brows, terrible fangs, hair burning like fire and a shining crown. Balarāma was at first slightly frightened, but remembering himself, he became fearless. He struck the demon on the head with a fist as heavy as a mountain. The blow was like a thunderbolt; Pralamba's head split open, he vomited blood and, with a great roar, fell dead like a mountain struck by Indra's weapon. The cowherds were amazed and praised Balarāma's strength, embracing him with love, while the gods rained garlands of flowers from the sky in celebration.
