Krishna and the Serpent Kaliya

Bhagavata Purana 10.17 · read aloud in the app

The story · English

King Parikshit asked why Kaliya had left Ramanaka, the home of the serpents, and what wrong he alone had done to Garuda. In answer, Suka told of a broken pact. Traditionally, the snakes were required to offer a sacrifice to the great bird Garuda. Every month, at each parvan, the serpents would contribute their share for their own protection. However, Kaliya was blinded by his own pride and the potency of his venom. In an act of defiance, he refused to honor the tradition and dared to devour the very sacrifice intended for Garuda. This arrogance did not go unnoticed. When mighty Garuda, dear to the Lord, heard of this betrayal, he became furious. Wishing to kill the serpent, he rushed at him with great speed.

The encounter was violent and swift. Kaliya, a creature of terrifying proportions, lunged at Garuda and bit him with his great fangs, his eyes blazing and his breath harsh. He lashed out with a tongue that seemed to radiate danger. But Garuda, son of Tarkshya and the mount of Madhusudana, was far swifter. With a sudden, powerful movement, he struck the serpent with his golden-hued left wing. Overcome by the force of the blow and trembling with fear, Kaliya fled the battlefield. He sought refuge in a deep, inaccessible pool of the Kalindi river, hoping that the depths of the water would shield him from further wrath.

While in the pool, Kaliya found a strange kind of security. Once, a hungry Garuda had forcibly seized the king of the fish there, though the sage Saubhari tried to stop him. Seeing the fish grieving for their lost lord, the sage, out of compassion for the creatures living there, declared that if Garuda ever entered those waters to eat fish, he would lose his life at once. Of all the serpents, only Kaliya knew of this curse. Fearing Garuda, he remained hidden in the depths, until Krishna at last drove him out of the pool.

When Krishna finally emerged from the lake, he was a sight of divine beauty, wearing a celestial garland and garments scented with fragrance, his form adorned with precious gems and gold. The cowherds, who had feared the worst, rushed to him as if they had just regained their own lives. Nanda, Yasoda, Rohini, and the other residents of Vraja embraced him, their hearts finally at peace. Rama held Krishna tightly and laughed, knowing his power, while the cattle and calves shared in the joy. The brahmanas and elders came to Nanda with their wives, congratulating him on his son's rescue from Kaliya and telling him to give gifts to the twice-born in thanks for Krishna's release, which Nanda happily did with gold and cows. Yasoda, who had lost her son and found him again, took him on her lap and wept again and again.

That night the people of Vraja and their cows stayed on the bank of the Kalindi, worn out by hunger, thirst and fatigue. At midnight, as they slept, a forest fire rising from the summer-dry woods surrounded the camp on every side. The flames swept through the woods, threatening to consume everything in their path. Terrified and confused, the people of Vraja fled toward Krishna, seeing him as their only protector. They cried out, 'Krishna, O powerful Rama, this terrible fire is swallowing us! Please save us from this flame of death; we cannot leave your feet, for you are our only refuge.' Seeing the desperation of his loved ones, the Lord of the Universe simply opened his mouth and drank the fierce fire, extinguishing the danger instantly.
