When the message came from his grandfather, Bharata went to him as he was asked, and he took Shatrughna with him for company. King Asvapati loved Bharata like his own son and heir, and the two brothers were treated with honour and kept at ease. Even so, they kept thinking of the old father they had left at home. And King Dasharatha could not stop thinking of them, Bharata and Shatrughna, so far away. He loved all four of his sons, and they clung to his heart as if they were his own arms. But the one he loved most was the eldest, Rama. He was beautiful and strong, free of envy and against all wrong. Taunts could not draw a harsh word from him. He spoke gently, and when his training in arms was over he would sit with wise old men and listen to them.
Rama was modest and truthful, and he kept every passion under control. He knew the Vedas and the arts a prince should know, and with the bow he went beyond even his father. He could tame a wild elephant, ride a fierce horse, drive a chariot and lead an army, and he never spoke for show or to do harm. He shone among people the way the noon sun shines. The old king wanted to rest. He said to himself, "If only I could see Rama made king while I am still alive, and then go to heaven content." There were frightening signs in the sky, and he felt his strength going, and he took them as warnings that death was near. So he called people, princes and lords from town and country, gave each a place to stay, and gave them gifts. He did not send for the king of Kekaya or for Janaka. He meant to send them the good news afterwards.
With the kings seated in silence around him and the crowds from town and village filling the hall, Dasharatha bowed to the assembly and spoke in a voice like a drum. "You know how my fathers of Ikshvaku's line ruled this kingdom, and I have tried to walk the same road and take care of my people. Now I am old. Thousands of years have passed over me, and the weight of ruling is too much for me. I want to rest and put my son in my place, if the twice-born here think it wise. Rama, my eldest, has greater gifts than mine. He is brave like Indra and the best keeper of what is right. Tomorrow I would like to make him my partner on the throne. Tell me if you agree, or show me a better way. Talk it over."
When the king finished, the princes cheered, the way peacocks cry out to a rain cloud, and the sound of thousands shook the palace. Peasant and townsman, priest and chief talked together briefly and soon agreed. "King, we know you are old," they said. "Please anoint Rama and set him at your side. We want to see our prince riding in state beneath the same royal umbrella that shades you." Then the king spoke again, as if to test what was truly in their hearts. "Your request raises one question for me, and I want an honest answer. Why do you want my eldest son to rule beside me while I am still ruling justly?" Every one of them answered, the humble and the great alike. "Because, King, we find every fine quality of body and mind in your son."
"No one on earth is his equal in truth, justice or fame," they said. "He keeps his word. He is kind and grateful and in command of himself. No man, demon or god has beaten him in battle, and he always comes home with Lakshmana, victorious. And when he rides back into the city he greets us like friends. He asks after our sons, our servants, our wives, as a father would. When we are in trouble he grieves with us, and when we celebrate he is happy with us. Girls and old women, townsmen and strangers all pray to the gods for him, morning and evening. Please hear us, King, and make Rama your Regent Heir." The king agreed, glad that their love was so plain. He turned to Vasishtha and Vamadeva. "It is Chaitra, and the flowers are out. Get everything ready for Rama to be made heir."
Vasishtha gave the servants their orders. By dawn they must bring gold, herbs and gems, white flowers, roasted rice, oil and honey, new clothes and a chariot, an elephant with lucky marks, the white umbrella and fans, a hundred shining vases, a tiger skin, and a bull with gilded horns. Gates were to be hung with sandal wreaths, food laid out for a hundred thousand, musicians and dancers set ready, and soldiers in their armour brought to court. When all was done, the king sent Sumantra to fetch Rama, and Rama came riding beside him. As his son climbed the terrace, Dasharatha could not look at him enough. Rama bowed at his feet, and the king lifted him up, held him close, and sat him on a golden seat beside his own, and the hall seemed to fill with light.
The old king smiled and said, "My dearest son, the people love you, so tomorrow, under the star Pushya, you will share my power. You don't need my advice, but love makes me give it. Stay modest. Rule your senses. Keep away from what anger and desire bring. Be the same in private as in public, and work hard to win the love of your ministers and your people." Rama's friends ran to tell his mother Kaushalya, and she rewarded them with gold and cattle. Rama drove home through cheering crowds, and the people went home happy to pray. Then the king met his council and fixed the time: tomorrow, when the moon entered Pushya. And he told Sumantra, "Bring Rama here again." When Rama heard the charioteer had come back, he grew anxious. "Tell me why you've come," he said. "Your father wants you," said Sumantra.
Rama hurried to the palace, and once more his father embraced him and seated him. "I am old," Dasharatha said. "I have had my share of life, and I have sons, and you the best of them. One duty is left: to put you on my throne. Every night I have terrible dreams. Meteors fall roaring to the earth, and the astrologers say the planets are set against my birth star. When signs like these appear, a king's death or ruin is close. So while my mind is still clear, be anointed tomorrow. People change their minds. Fast tonight, you and Sita, and sleep on sacred grass, and have your friends keep watch. Bharata is away, and this is the best time. He may still be true to you, but minds can change suddenly. Go now, my son. Good night."
Rama went straight to his mother's rooms. Kaushalya was in her chapel, dressed in linen, praying with half-closed eyes to the goddess of fortune to protect her son. Sumitra was there, and Lakshmana, and Sita had been sent for. Rama bowed and said, "Mother, my father has handed me the care of the people. Tomorrow I am to be anointed. Sita and I must fast tonight. Please keep whatever vows you think right, for me and for her." Kaushalya had waited so long for this that she cried as she answered. "Live long, my darling. The stars must have been beautiful the night you were born. Bearing you was worth the pain." Rama smiled at Lakshmana, who sat with his hands joined. "You will rule this land with me," he said. "You are my second self. The throne is sweet to me because of you."
The king sent Vasishtha to guide the fast, and Rama ran to help the old priest down from his chariot. Vasishtha told him the news, set the rules for him and Sita, and left. Rama's friends talked with him a while before he said good night, and his house was bright with happy servants. Driving back, Vasishtha found every street jammed with people, the roads swept and watered, flowers everywhere, and banners on the roofs, everyone waiting for morning. He told the king all was done, and Dasharatha went in to his queens. Rama bathed, prayed with Sita to Narayana, held the cup of holy oil to his head, and made his offering in the fire. Then the two of them lay quietly on sacred grass in Vishnu's chapel, his thoughts fixed on the god.
