The Soul Cannot Die
Bhagavad Gita 2.30
Meaning · English
The soul that dwells within the body of everyone is always beyond being killed, Arjun, descendant of Bharat. Therefore, for all living beings, you should not mourn.
Three words carry it. Dehi means the one who has a body, the dweller, from deha, body. Nityam means always, without a gap in time. Avadhya means not to be slain, from vadha, a killing. Put together, the dweller in every body cannot be killed. Krishna says this to Arjuna, calling him a descendant of Bharat, to remind him of his line and his steadiness. The word sarvasya, of everyone, matters: the claim covers the friend, the enemy and the stranger alike. Then comes the conclusion, marked by tasmat, therefore. Since this holds for all beings, Arjuna has no ground to mourn any of them. The reason Krishna gives is that his grief rests on a mistake. He is treating the body's end as the end of the person. The word shochitum, to mourn, names that grief, and arhasi says it is not fitting here. Shankara reads this as the self being one unchanging awareness, so grief comes from mistaking the body for it. Ramanuja reads it as each soul being a real, distinct individual, never destroyed, and dependent on God. Madhva reads it as souls being eternally distinct from God and from one another, with grief belonging to those who forget this. Krishna asks Arjuna to look past the body to the one who lives in it.
A work glove lies cut open on a bench, and people stand around it sorrowing. The hand that wore it is warm and unhurt, resting in a pocket. The glove is the body, which can be torn. The hand is the one within, which the text says cannot be slain.
1. Today, when worry or sorrow about someone comes up, pause and say their name quietly to yourself. 2. Name one thing about them that is not their body: their humour, the way they listen, their kindness. 3. Hold that for one minute and notice whether the grief changes, even slightly. 4. Tonight, tell that person, or someone close, one thing you value in them.
A young woman sits in a hospital corridor at three in the morning. Her grandmother, who raised her, has been moved to intensive care. She keeps picturing the bed, the tubes, the still face, and her mind runs ahead to the funeral. Krishna's words move her attention in steps. First, they separate the grandmother from the body on the bed: the one who sang while cooking and scolded her for skipping meals is the dweller the text speaks of, not the frame. Second, they widen the view, since the text says this is true of every person, so the corridor is full of people in the same position. Third, they take away the pressure to mourn in advance. She can sit, drink water, call her mother, and speak to her grandmother when allowed. Ordinary experience bears out that grief is heaviest when the mind lives in imagined scenes rather than the present hour. The teaching does not promise the pain will lift, or that the loss will not hurt when it comes. It does not replace the doctors, who are doing what she cannot.
