Meaning · English
One person looks on this soul as a wonder. Another speaks of it as a wonder. Another hears of it as a wonder. And some, even after hearing, do not understand it at all.
The word at the center is ashcharya, a wonder, something that stops you because it does not fit what you already know. Krishna uses it three times, once each for seeing, speaking and hearing. The last word to note is veda, to understand or to know. The verse ends on a plain fact: some hear and still do not know. Krishna has been telling Arjuna about the soul, and here he admits how hard it is to take in. Whoever glimpses it is astonished. Whoever tries to put it into words finds the words strange. Whoever listens is astonished again. Even then, some walk away without grasping it. The reason sits in the soul itself. Everything Arjuna can point to is body, battlefield and relatives, and the soul is none of these. Hearing about it is not the same as knowing it. So Krishna does not scold Arjuna for being slow. He says that understanding here is rare and does not come from one hearing. The commentators read the wonder differently. Shankara takes it as the soul's own subtlety, which puts it beyond ordinary experience. Ramanuja stresses how unlike the body the soul is, which is why hearing alone rarely suffices. Madhva is read as stressing that real knowing comes to few.
Someone hums a tune they caught through a neighbour's wall. A second person hears the humming and repeats it. Neither knows the words or the song. The soul is like that tune. It can be heard of and passed along, yet knowing it needs more than hearing.
1. Pick one teaching you have heard many times and nodded at, such as a saying about loss or patience. 2. Tonight, sit for five minutes and write two sentences: one on what you really understand of it, one on what you only repeat. 3. Leave the second sentence unsolved. Read it again in a week and see whether anything has shifted. 4. When someone else struggles to take in a hard truth, listen to them without hurrying to explain.
A man stands in a hospital corridor an hour after his father has died. Relatives keep repeating wise sayings, and he nods at each one. Nothing lands. He feels there is something wrong with him. Krishna's words change what he makes of that. Understanding the soul is rare, and hearing is different from knowing. The nodding does not mean he has failed. Krishna himself says that even after hearing, some do not understand. So the man need not force himself to feel a comfort he has not yet reached. He can let the words stay unfinished and return to them when he is ready. He can also let the relatives' words be what they are, kind and incomplete. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: advice about grief often sounds hollow until a person has lived through something of their own. The teaching does not promise that the corridor will feel lighter. It does not end grief, and it does not replace the people who can sit beside him or a doctor if his sorrow becomes too heavy to carry.
