The Seedless Stillness
Yoga Sutras 1.51
Meaning · English
When even that impression is held still, everything has been held still, and what remains is absorption without a seed.
Three terms carry this sutra. Nirodha is a holding still, a stopping of what moves. Nirbija means without seed: nir is without, bija is seed. Samadhi is absorption, a settling together of the mind into one steadiness. Tasya api means even of that, and points back to the impression named in 1.50. The plain sense: the last impression is itself held still. Since it was the one thing that suppressed the others, stopping it leaves nothing running. All is stilled, and the absorption that remains has no seed, nothing from which a new turning of the mind could grow. Patanjali says this because 1.50 left a puzzle. A fresh impression overrides the old ones, but it is still an impression. If it stayed, something would still be sown. So the sutra finishes the work: even the helper is set down. Vyasa's Bhashya reads it this way: with every turning stilled, the absorption has no seed and is called the one without cognition. The commentators agree on the sense and differ only in how they describe what remains.
A fire burns down the dry grass in a field, and then the last patch of burning grass goes out too. Nothing is left to catch, and no spark sits in the ash. The helpful impression is the fire that cleared the field, and the seedless stillness is the bare ground afterward.
1. Once today, choose a quiet five minutes and sit without a task, a screen or music. 2. When a thought rises, notice what sort it is: a worry, a plan, a memory. Name it silently and let it pass. 3. Notice the thought that says you are doing this well. See that it is also a thought. 4. At the end, note without judging whether anything was left running in the mind.
