A Fresh Groove

Yoga Sutras 1.50

Meaning · English

The impression born of that perception stands against other impressions and holds them back.

Three words carry this sutra. Taja means born of that, and that is the truth-bearing perception of 1.48. Samskara is an impression, a groove left in the mind by what has been lived, like a footpath worn by many feet. Pratibandhi means blocking, something that stands in the way of another. Anya means other. So the sutra says: the impression born of that clear perception blocks the other impressions. Every word is accounted for. Patanjali says it because the mind is ruled by its stored grooves, and each one pulls the mind back into old turnings. The sutras before show a perception that is true and particular. Here he adds that it leaves its own groove, and this groove is stronger than the rest, so the older ones lose their hold. Vyasa's Bhashya reads it this way: the impression of this clear knowing checks the impressions of the ordinary, restless mind. The commentators agree on the main point. The next sutra then asks what happens when even this blocking impression stops.

A field crossed by many faint tracks gets one wide road laid through it. People start walking the road, and the old tracks fill with grass. The road is the impression from clear perception. The tracks are the older impressions of the restless mind.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes in a quiet place and recall one moment today when you saw something plainly, without hurry or opinion. 2. Notice what that memory is like, and how it differs from the usual run of thoughts about the day. 3. Tomorrow, when an old habit of thought starts up, pause for one breath and see whether it is a worn track. 4. Note it. Do not argue with it.
