Meaning · English
This seeing has a different object from what is learned by hearing or by reasoning, because it reaches the particular, the single thing as it is.
Three words carry the sutra. Shruta is what is heard: scripture, teaching, report. Anumana is inference, measuring one thing from another, as smoke points to fire. Prajna is direct knowing, the clear seeing named in the sutras just before. Vishesha is the particular, this one thing in its own detail. The sutra says the seeing of prajna has a different object from the first two. Heard words and inference work in general terms. They tell you what kind of thing something is. They cannot hand over this one thing as it stands. Only direct seeing reaches that, so its object is the particular. Patanjali says this because the reader has just been told that this perception is unfailingly true. The question follows: how does it differ from what scripture and reasoning already give? His answer is that it covers ground they cannot cover, rather than competing with them. Vyasa, in the Bhashya, takes it this way: words and inference grasp the general, and the particular is beyond them, so this knowing is a separate means of knowledge. The later commentators follow him on this point.
Someone reads a careful description of a mango and works out from its smell that it is ripe. Both give true facts about mangoes. Then she bites into it. The taste was in neither. The description and the reasoning are the heard and the inferred; the bite is the direct seeing of the particular.
1. Once today, pick one plain object: a leaf, a cup, your own hand. Give it two minutes of steady looking. 2. Notice which thoughts are names and facts you already knew, such as "leaf, green, tree." Let them pass. 3. Notice what is left that no label gave you: the exact edge, the particular grain, the way this one differs from any other. 4. When the mind slips back into naming, simply look again.
